Trauma & Disaster Response

Coping with Uncertainty and Fear

If you need help coping, call Colorado Crisis Services 24/7/365 at (970) 494-4200. For short-term emergency behavioral health support contact disasterresponse@summitstonehealth.org.

SummitStone Health Partners assists in meeting the mental health needs of our community members during a disaster. The Crisis Counseling and Resilience Enhancement Team (CARE Team) of Larimer County is a partnership comprised of SummitStone Health Partners, the Health District of Northern Larimer County, the American Red Cross, and the Larimer County Department of Health & Environment and local community therapists. The CARE Team collaborates with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Colorado Crisis Education and Response Network (CoCERN), and other city and county governmental departments.

The mission of the CARE Team of Larimer County is to develop and provide an immediate mental health response to survivors, responders and communities affected by disasters, emergencies and other critical incidents.

A CARE Team Behavioral Health Disaster Responder is not practicing therapy, but is instead providing a range of basic services through a “tiered” response effort that is designed to support normal functioning during and after times of trauma and chaos. The intent is to promote individual, family and community resilience. Disaster response helps affected individuals return to a pre-event level of functioning as quickly as possible. For more information, visit our resource, Coping With Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress.

Depending on the type of and duration of an event, the team’s response may include a number of intervention formats including: Mental Health Triage, Basic Support (food, drink, shelter, warmth and familial connection), Psychological First Aid, Outreach, Crisis intervention, Referral and/or Education.
